A miniature solid-state drive in M.2 2230 format, aimed at owners of portable gaming consoles a la Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. In fact, it is a shortened version of the previously released Black SN770 drive with an identical controller and the same speed indicators, but reduced to the size of a tiny three-gram chip. Based on the updated Innogrit platform, this drive skillfully embodies technical innovations characteristic of both the budget and premium segments.
Particularly noteworthy is the use of a four-channel controller that supports HMB technology, which replaced expensive buffer SDRAM memory. According to the manufacturer, the new platform provides an optimal balance between final cost, drive reliability and speed. The official announcement states a 40% increase in performance and a 20% increase in energy efficiency compared to the previous generation of WD Black drives.
The WD SN770 range includes options with capacities ranging from 500, 1000 and 2000 GB. In the case of the 1000 GB version, the stated read speed is 5150 MB/s and the write speed is 4850 MB/s. The reliability of the device is confirmed by an official 5-year warranty and a decent guaranteed recording capacity (TBW) of 1200 TB. The drive comes with a proprietary WD Dashboard utility for monitoring temperature and performance, copying and backing up data, archiving and backup. Overall, the WD Black SN770M is another example of a fast, modern and well-designed SSD for video game fans and owners of portable game consoles.
