The top lens of the Art series with one of the most popular focal lengths in portrait photography - 85 mm. The background behind the subject is effectively blurred by the 9-blade aperture, which opens to a maximum of f/1.4. The minimum aperture of the lens is f/16. To improve the quality of the picture and minimize the appearance of parasitic effects (chromatic aberrations, flare and reflections, etc.), two low-dispersion elements have been added to the optical design of the Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG HSM A, and a Super Multi-Layer coating has been applied to the front lens . Also in the lens body there was a place for a fast drive of the Hyper Sonic AF automatic focusing system. A filter with a thread diameter of 86 mm can be attached to the large front lens of the model. The lens is compatible with the native Sigma SA mount, Canon EF and Nikon F systems.

Model overview based on user reviews
The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art HSM DG lens is highly regarded for its exceptional image quality, delivering stunning sharpness, creamy bokeh, and excellent performance in low light due to its f/1.4 aperture. It is particularly praised for producing magical portraits with minimal editing required. The lens features a robust build quality and comes with a generous package, including a case with a strap. However, users have noted its significant size and weight as a drawback, especially when used with mirrorless systems like Sony's E Mount. Autofocus performance has been a concern for some, with reports of front and back focusing issues on DSLR systems, although it performs well on mirrorless cameras. Despite these challenges, the lens remains a top choice for portrait photography enthusiasts who prioritize image quality over portability.
Pros

Cons

The conclusion is simple: if you NEED autofocus, then choose a different lens.

I used Nikon D800. Immediately terrible front focus up to 1.5 meters, which then, with increasing distance, smoothly transitions into back focus... The docking station did not help... and there is no point... I haven’t read anywhere before that if you adjusted the lens itself on the docking station, then in manual focusing you will not be able to focus... (more precisely, with your eyes, you will see what is accurate, but the correction will lead to focusing...). Otherwise, everything is great :) So if you NEED autofocus, then choose another lens. If you work with manual focus, then everything is great.
Everything except...
- conditional autofocus
- color rendering is slightly yellowish

The quality of the photos in all parameters is simply stunning: sharpness even at an open aperture, low levels of CA and vignetting, even in less than ideal conditions, with creamy and delicate bokeh, and "rings" that remain round at any aperture setting. It produces magical portraits that require little to no editing. It handles flare and backlighting well. The lens's brightness allows shooting in low light without raising the ISO to "noisy" levels. The body materials and build quality are top-notch. The package is generous and includes a case with a strap.
Well, except for the size and weight. I use it on a Sony system (E Mount). But you get used to the size and weight and don't notice them after a few hours. Expensive protective and polarizing filters due to the size of the front lens.

Ideal portrait

The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is an excellent choice for portrait photography among third-party lenses for the Sony FE mount. It is part of the Art series, known for its artistic qualities and preferred by professionals and keen amateur photographers.

High aperture ratio

The main advantage of the lens is its f/1.4 aperture, which provides excellent shooting in low light conditions. This is complemented by the beautiful bokeh created by the 9-blade aperture.

Advanced optical design

The optical design features 14 elements in 12 groups with two low dispersion elements to eliminate chromatic aberrations. The front lens is coated with a Super Multi-Layer to reduce flare and reflection, and the Hyper Sonic AF motor ensures fast, accurate focusing.

Heavy design

One of the disadvantages of the model is its significant weight (more than 1.1 kg) and dimensions, inherited from the optics for SLR cameras. Its improved version, Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, is lighter, but has a plastic body instead of metal. Both models are decent options, but the choice between them depends on preferences in weight and materials.
