Model overview based on user reviews
The Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR AF-S IF-ED Zoom-Nikkor lens is generally well-received for its excellent quality/price ratio and features such as the stabilizer and included hood. Users appreciate its sharpness, color rendering, and tenacious focus, making it a strong choice for those seeking a reliable telephoto lens. However, some users note that it can be heavy and has slow focusing, with stabilization being crucial for sharp images at longer focal lengths. While one user found it not worth the money due to its weight and darkness, others consider it a best solution for Nikon telephoto needs, especially on crop sensors. Overall, it meets expectations for many, though it may require some adjustment for optimal use.

Working without stabilization is impossible at the long end; transitioning from my 35mm with stabilization has not resulted in sharp images yet, with blurs visible, so I have to increase the ISO to shorten the shutter speed.
If anyone is interested in "live" shots from it, I posted today's city walk on my blog, meaning I bought it, attached it to my camera, and went out to shoot around the city.
