It belongs to the Prime family, which focuses on the quality of the power subsystem, effective component cooling, and additional system control and monitoring tools. As of early 2024, it is one of the most affordable options for building a modern computer based on AMD Ryzen 7000/8000 series processors and DDR5 memory.

ASUS Prime B650M-R is a Micro-ATX motherboard based on the AMD B650 chipset. The absence of the E index in the chipset name means that it supports only PCI-Express 4.0, which is still sufficient for most tasks. The board allows for full overclocking of both processor cores and the integrated video card and RAM.

Two DDR5 DIMM slots generally provide better overclocking than four, especially when using AMD EXPO-ready memory modules. The board features two M.2 NVMe SSD slots, one above the graphics card and one below it. The bottom of the VRM is cooled by a bare aluminum heatsink. The CPU is powered by a dual 4+4-pin connector.

The Ethernet port supports speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, but four of the six USB ports on the rear panel operate at the 2.0 standard.
