High-quality closed-back wired over-ear headphones with a detachable cable for use in amateur and professional studio conditions. The main feature of this model is its relatively flat frequency response, which provides a neutral monitor sound, necessary for evaluating the quality of studio work or live recordings. They can be useful for mixing, mastering and any other types of audio processing.
In addition, the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x headphones are a good choice for home users who prefer clear and natural sound without the extra tonal colour usually introduced by consumer models. The folding design of the headphones is similar to that used in the older model of the ATH-M50x line. It consists of a metal headband with a soft finish and durable plastic cups with large and comfortable ear cushions that provide reliable passive noise isolation. Suitable for long-term studio work. They have an increased impedance (45 ohms) and are designed for use with professional equipment, a high-quality sound card, or a stationary Hi-Fi player. They are equipped with a long 3-metre cable with a 3-pin mini-Jack 3.5mm connector and an adapter for 3-pin Jack 6.35mm.
Always clarify the specifications and configuration of the product with the online store manager before purchasing.

For the music lover with a small head, choosing between the 40s and 50s. Take these so you don't smash your 50s against the wall. Subjectively, for listening to music they are no worse or better than the 50s. I can’t show you the frequency response or anything else, it seems to me that the 50x sound drier, the stage is narrower, the 40x seem to be more voluminous, wider and in general seem to be even better suited for LISTENING to music (I’m not saying or insisting). It seems to me so after I smashed my 50s against the wall, not finding the strength to put up with the fact that they don’t sit on a small head at all, they rattle, rattle, and wobble. Only when I put on the 40s did I feel like I was wrong to have previously acquired the damned 50s. I suppose that the sound of the 40s seems better to me simply because they fit much more conveniently and tightly on my head Thanks to the presence of broken 50x, I have a 1.2 m wire, so no use Audio-Technica ATH-M40x less than month |
Luxurious ears! BRAVO! True, in my particular case, a nuance arose - they were bought specifically for stationary use under the Creative Sound Blaster Z card, in which there is a separate headphone output with a powerful amp, which could not be curbed. In these headphones, you have to listen at a meager volume, so as not to go deaf - the problem is low ohm. It so happened that I listen to both speakers and headphones, and the volume that is normal for speakers, in headphones, just detonates in the eardrums ... Today (already tired) I bought ceramic resistances and hung 150 ohms (LRG) on each core, which raised measured resistance up to 335 ohm. Now, without changing the system volume, I can listen to both speakers and headphones. In my opinion, the quality has not fallen, but maybe it has increased, since the sound works at a normal load and not at a minuscule 5-10%. So I sit in them, bastard, and write this comment. GOOD LUCK! Manufacturing quality - everything is solid, including the packaging, set, bag, and interchangeable cables. The sound is very realistic and balanced, though for me, personally, it's a slight downside (a downside of my perception) as I'm used to headphones with pronounced bass. The hinges not only allow you to conveniently fold them into the provided bag but also "adjust" to the shape of your head, making them not tiring at all. Low ohm is not a disadvantage of headphones, but a nuance of my sound card, which requires headphones with more than 300 ohms for normal operation. When buying, I stipulated this moment, but the consultant was extremely skeptical about the amp in the sound card ... but in vain. use Audio-Technica ATH-M40x month or more i recommend it should buy |
Was delighted with the sound, plugging in the Blue Yeti microphone via the 3.5mm jack. However, was saddened by a crack in the headband that appeared after 8 months of use. The issue is currently being addressed through the Russian ATH website and the service centers listed there. They say the headband needs to be replaced; I live in a region that's about 300km from the nearest service center that deals with these headphones, and the repair time is estimated to be 3 months. My gut feeling says the problem is unlikely to be resolved. Again, 7 thousand for a lifespan of 8 months. I didn't buy with my last money, but neither am I a millionaire to ignore this situation. Honestly, not believing in a satisfactory outcome with the support for this product, I'm looking for something more repairable. For example, AIAIAI TMA-2. At least with these, everything is straightforward, albeit the price is approximately 10k. Sound, appearance broke down ![]() |
The name Audio-Technica means the standard of high-quality sound. Everything that is produced under this brand can be safely bought, unless, of course, the price is scary. The ATH-M40x headphones are no exception.
Design
Ergonomics of the model did a great job, and even a little too smart. The soft headband is adjustable, the bowls fold, turn in all planes, which you get used to at once. The cable is twisted, detachable, long enough (3 m), plus an additional straight cable is included.
The plastic is matte, pleasant to the touch, the ear cushions are dense, elastic, high quality leatherette. When the headphones are fully folded, they become half the size and fit comfortably in the fabric case, which is also included.
Sound
The frequency range of 15 – 24000 Hz fully reveals all the possibilities of sound. The frequency response is even, without bursts, the bass is accentuated, not deaf, does not stick out and does not blur the overall mix. Highs and mids are heard clearly. The model will perfectly cope with the monitoring of studio tracks during mixing. Those "jambs" that you will not hear from external monitors, the ATH-M40x will definitely not let you miss.
Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is an ergonomic semi-professional headphone model in the price range from 120 to 160 USD. A high-quality, although not cheap, addition to studio equipment.
