the Apple iPad is a "tablet" computer, the first device of its kind in the Apple product line. Positioned by the manufacturer as an analogue of netbooks, ie. something between a mobile phone and a laptop. In fact, it is a rather peculiar device with its own design features.

Frame

iPad is made in monoblock form factor. The front panel is made of plastic, the back is all-metal (aluminium). The build quality is at a good level, without squeaks and backlashes. The device has a small thickness — only 13 mm.

Control

On the front panel there is a classic for Apple single touch key "Return" ("Home"). Additional control buttons are located on the right side — this is the volume rocker and the screen rotation lock key. At the top of the tablet there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a power button; on the bottom there is a branded dock connector for connecting peripherals and two speakers. There is no slot for memory cards — they can only be used through a special adapter and with limited functionality. There are also no USB ports.

Screen

The iPad screen with a diagonal of 9.7 "is made using IPS technology, previously used in computer monitors, and is distinguished by high-quality colour reproduction, good contrast and very wide viewing angles. Under direct sunlight, it remains quite readable.

The display sensor is made using capacitive technology, multi-touch is supported. There is an accelerometer that provides auto-rotation of the screen, and a light sensor.

Hardware

The hardware of the tablet is based on Apple's own A4 processor. The clock frequency is 1 GHz, there is a built-in graphics accelerator. The amount of RAM is 256 MB.

Software part

iPad runs on the iOS operating system. To activate your tablet, you need to connect it to your computer and optionally sync it with iTunes. The built-in Safari browser does not support Flash (although there is a separate application for viewing YouTube videos). Downloading multimedia content to the tablet is carried out, as is the case with other Apple products, exclusively through iTunes — not all users find this procedure convenient.

On the other hand, it is worth noting the iBooks application written specifically for the iPad, which has a pleasant interface and greatly simplifies the work with e-books. In addition, the iWork office software package was completely redesigned for the tablet, which, including allows you to work with Microsoft Office documents and create PDF files. Work with e-mail is supported, including with Microsoft Exchange and Gmail services.

And the identity of the iPad operating system with the iPhone means that all applications written for the iPhone will also work on the tablet — another thing is that due to the difference in screen resolution, the graphics will be far from perfect, and the reverse option (launching an application for the iPad on iPhone) is not possible.

Data transfer

iPad is equipped with a Wi-Fi module that supports 802.11n and Bluetooth. The latter function, however, is only designed to work with wireless keyboards, headphones and headsets, file transfer via Bluetooth is not possible.

It is worth noting that along with the considered iPad, there is iPad 3G — this version of the tablet is equipped with a 3G communication module and aGPS function.

Multimedia

As noted above, downloading content to the iPad is carried out only using iTunes, it is not possible to do this directly.

The built-in media player supports video files up to 720p — keep in mind that the aspect ratio of the screen is 4:3, which means that widescreen video will be displayed with black bars at the top and bottom. The playback itself occurs without delay, including and when rewinding.

In addition to playback on its own screen, the tablet is capable of displaying a video signal with a resolution of up to 1024x768 on an external screen.

Camera

iPad does not have a built-in camera. Thus, the video chat functions on it are physically inaccessible, and connecting an external camera is difficult due to the lack of USB ports.

Battery

The tablet has a very decent battery performance: it provides up to 10 hours of fairly intensive work (using Wi-Fi, watching videos, playing games). The battery can be charged both from the mains and from the USB port; the latter, however, requires a port with maximum current, which can be a problem on some modern PCs.
