- Build quality. They look solid and very tidy; nothing wobbles, falls off, or creaks (I have Technics bookshelf speakers where the build/materials qual. is similar).
- Decent sound for their price range. They’re priced like cheap plastic speakers, yet they have a bass reflex port that’s not just decorative, which for this internal volume and power is kind of nonsense (but it works!). - Power button on the front panel, so you can turn them on/off without getting up. - Removable grille (cloth mesh). You can take it off and enjoy the might of a 75 mm cellulose (i.e., paper) cone with a radically black plastic dust cap :) - A respectable amount of power headroom in the built-in amplifier. - Short cables (power and audio). - The power transformer gets warm if you touch the back of the right speaker, even when it’s switched off (the power plug is in the outlet). - FR in the upper range (9 kHz and above) is slightly rolled off, fixed with an EQ. - Unfortunately, the decent power headroom of the built-in amp at volumes above halfway (subjectively that’s more than enough) comes with distortion. |
If anyone knows where or how to fix the defect, please let me know. The case is wooden and probably thanks to it the playback quality is good, if you are lucky. I wasn’t lucky. On the third day after purchase, the SVEN SPS-607 speaker started to hum—the one w/ the volume controls and the power switch. After a week of use, I was given a new unit of the same system to replace the one that hummed constantly. The second unit worked flawlessly for 9 months. Then it started humming again, but not consistently—just now and then. After switching on, it works normally for 10 to 30 minutes. Sometimes the hum goes away when you mess w/ the knob, and rarely it stops by itself. It feels like this model has an inherent electronics defect. I can’t bring myself to throw it out. But it’s impossible to use a system like this. |
