How to clean a humidifier?Basic recommendations for humidifier care

How to choose a humidifier and air washer?Differences and key factors for choosing an ultrasonic humidifier or air washer
My wife and I have been living in rented accommodation for five years. We lived in one apartment for four years, and it was great, but all good things come to an end. After moving out from there, we drifted around for four months but finally found a place with good housing quality and a reasonable rental price. We moved in last November, and everything was fine, except the apartment had really good ventilation. The ventilation grids would start pulling air with incredible force whenever they had the chance, plus there was a small but constant draft from the elevator shaft. The heating worked perfectly, so there were no issues with temperature. But the humidity… the humidity was very low due to such powerful ventilation. Dryness of the mucous membranes in the nasopharynx, a dry cough, discomfort in the eyes, and especially skin dryness that both of us experienced suggested that we needed to take action. First, I brought a proper hygrometer as part of a weather station I borrowed from a friend. The device gave us such figures that my wife and I were quite shocked. On a frosty January night, the apartment's humidity fell to 12%. So, if ever there was a reason to urgently buy a humidifier, this was it. Modern ultrasonic humidifier with digital control. It humidifies the air without heating, meaning it uses cool mist. I used to only see such devices in stores, but it turned out to be just as cool at home. It was enough to turn it on at full power and leave it in a closed room for forty minutes, and the air immediately felt different. By then, there wasn't a proper hygrometer in the apartment, but judging by the feel, the humidity became quite comfortable. Now, we just periodically turn it on at minimum power and rely purely on our sensations. In this mode, it operates very quietly, and only muffled sounds of water can be heard. It consumes minimal electricity. There is a timer for turning it off, which we sometimes set for the night. Unfortunately, it turned out that the built-in hygrometer shows some nonsense, poorly related to reality. According to its readings, the room's humidity is always in the range of 45 to 55, which cannot be true. So the entire built-in hygrostating system also turned out to be useless. |
I would like to update my review. The old one should be removed by a moderator. I ran the humidifier at maximum power (4). Usually, I would fill it once a day when I got home from work. It monitors the water level in the tray and shuts off if there's none, so I don't understand why the main operating component - the ultrasonic membrane - failed after 3 months. I ordered a new membrane, installed it, and it works again. However, I still don't understand why such an important part is made so poorly and unreliably in a fairly expensive humidifier. The humidity sensor showed some unrealistic numbers, but I just ignored it. There were no other problems. The electronics functioned well, the water flow was good, the noise... Well, there is noise, of course, but the membrane is working there. It's not silent, but it didn't disturb my or my wife's sleep. The actual air humidification worked quite well. It's best if something directs the outgoing flow (like a draft or a fan). From other reviews, I see that membrane failure happened to others as well. In my opinion, it's not worth getting this kind of device, even though it is repairable. The plastic is decent, no complaints about the peripherals. The humidifier's humidity sensor displays incorrect values, and it's not just a minor issue that has failed, but the "heart" of the device. It's almost funny. ![]() |
