Bought this 512G SSD at the beginning of 2023. Unfortunately, now I'm looking for a replacement. Yesterday, the computer refused to start, BIOS did not recognize the drive with the OS installed. The computer still starts (every other time). Luckily, I managed to back up the necessary files onto an external drive. After that, I did a cluster integrity check (attaching a photo). I'm looking for a replacement, but I'm very grateful that I was able to save the files. OS launch speed. It is surprising that damaged clusters have appeared. The SSD is used only as a system drive, without frequent rewrites of large volumes of files. Now I don't know if I should get an SSD for the operating system again? Reasonable cost
The Patriot brand is known for the production of gaming RAM and various gaming accessories, but sometimes it produces goods for mere mortals. Today our guest is just a sample of such products for "ordinary" users — the Patriot P300 512 GB solid-state drive.
The controller of the future comes from the past
The manufacturer does not specify which controller is used in the SSD, limiting itself to calling it the "next generation controller". Judging by the data on the network, this is the Silicon Motion SM2263XT, the younger brother of the well-proven SM2262. Compared to the SM2262, it has a reduced number of channels for connecting flash memory to four, and also lacks a DRAM interface. It has proven itself well in low-cost models, but somehow it’s not entirely fair to talk about the generation of the future for a controller that has been on the market for several years.
High IOPS and drawdown when filling the SLC buffer
The list of advantages of this model includes a reasonable cost, excellent reading speed, fast work with 4 KB blocks, a three-year warranty and a wide variety of volume modifications. And among the features, let's recall the presence of an SLC buffer, the capacity of which is about 5 – 7% of the free volume. After it is full, the linear write speed is seriously reduced from 1100 MB / s to 160 – 300 MB / s, which makes it similar to inexpensive SATA SSDs that “sag” in a similar way. However, their price is almost the same, but in terms of IOPS (i.e., the speed of working with small files), the Patriot drive leaves them far behind. All in all, the Patriot P300 can be seen as a fast, high-capacity, and relatively affordable solution, especially for compact systems that support M.2 SSD with PCI-E 3.0x4 interface.
