The fourth generation of iPad Air tablets borrowed the design from the "professional" iPad Pro: the frames became thinner, the home button disappeared, Touch ID was moved to the power button on top, and the manufacturer began to use a USB-C connector. The model boasts a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2360x1640 pixels and an A14 Bionic processor, like the smartphones of the iPhone 12 line.

The performance is enough to run applications smoothly, run demanding games, use various editors and, especially, surf the web. And with the addition of a second-generation Apple Pencil keyboard and stylus, sold separately, the tablet turns into a full-fledged laptop. The 7-megapixel front camera is designed for video calls, while the 12-megapixel rear camera supports 4K video recording and takes good quality pictures. Complementing this feature set are stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 6, and a 28.6 Wh battery that delivers up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or video playback on a single charge.

Since its inception in 2013, Apple's Air tablet lineup has had pretty much the same look. Its appearance was radically redesigned in 2020, when the Air 4 model was released into the arena.

By reducing the bezels and removing the Home button from the front panel, the tablet now looks more like the Apple iPad Pro 11. The model is assembled in a body that is only 6.1 mm thick, weighs 458 g and has a fingerprint sensor in the side power button. User authentication by fingerprint is the main way to unlock the device, but the tablet did not deliver facial recognition functions.

Frameless screen

The display of the tablet has been increased to 10.9". The substrate for it is still the Liquid Retina IPS-matrix, which recognizes pressing the Apple Pencil 2 stylus. The screen supports True Tone technology — automatic adaptation of brightness, contrast and colour temperature to ambient lighting conditions. In addition to working with a pen, the tablet boasts support for the Apple Magic Keyboard and Apple Smart Keyboard Folio.

The highlight of the Apple iPad Air 4 2020 programme is the top-end 5nm A14 Bionic chipset. This is the most powerful of Apple's mobile processors at the time of the announcement, which is tough for tasks of absolutely any severity. The performance margin of the tablet will last for several years in a row. The “lifetime” of the device remains the same — 10 hours when working in Wi-Fi networks and about 9 hours via mobile Internet. A separate line of users will appreciate the USB-C interface. The model can be recommended to those who need uncompromising performance and prefer to purchase the most advanced devices possible.
