1. Why it’s important to know capsule and coffee machine compatibility

Capsule compatibility with your coffee machine is a key factor that affects both drink quality and ease of use. Every capsule system has its own unique format: shape, size, and even brewing technology differ between Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Tassimo, and Lavazza. That’s why capsules from different systems aren’t interchangeable, and trying to “guess by eye” almost always ends in disappointment. The only exceptions are compatible alternatives (for example, L’OR for Nespresso Original) and multi-format coffee machines.

Capsules that don’t match can simply fail to fit into the machine’s slot or get stuck inside. In the worst case, this can break the mechanism and void your warranty. In addition, each system has its own pressure and water volume settings, so even capsules that look similar from different manufacturers won’t deliver the same taste.

Before buying a capsule coffee machine, it’s also important not only to confirm its compatibility with a specific system, but to understand how wide a range of drinks that system offers. Otherwise, you risk wanting to try something new and finding the capsule selection disappointingly limited.

In short, knowing compatibility isn’t just a guarantee of delicious coffee—it’s confidence that your machine will run smoothly and every drink will turn out exactly as the manufacturer intended.

2. Nespresso Original

The Nespresso Original system is considered one of the most widespread on the capsule coffee market. Its capsules are made of aluminum, which protects against oxygen and moisture and helps preserve flavor and aroma. The capsule format is designed specifically for Nespresso Original series machines and optimized for the pressure and water volume in these devices, ensuring consistently high-quality drinks.

Important! Nespresso Original capsules are not compatible with coffee machines from the Vertuo series: Vertuo uses a completely different operating principle and capsule shape.

One advantage of the Original system is the wide selection of third-party compatible capsules. Many brands produce capsules that fit this format, including L’OR, Lavazza, Starbucks, as well as Jacobs and other popular brands. However, when choosing compatible capsules, pay attention to the manufacturers’ notes: certain series may be incompatible with specific coffee machine models.

All in all, Nespresso Original remains the most versatile system: you can choose either original Nespresso capsules or alternatives from other brands, expanding your range of flavors and aromas without risking drink quality.

3. Nespresso Vertuo

The Nespresso Vertuo system is a newer development from the company, differing not only in capsule shape but also in brewing principle. Vertuo capsules have a dome-like shape and a barcode on the rim. During brewing, the machine reads this code and automatically selects the optimal parameters: water volume, temperature, and spin speed.

The technology is based on the proprietary Centrifusion™ system: the capsule spins at up to 7,000 revolutions per minute, and water flows evenly through the ground coffee. This method creates a stable crema and fully reveals the aroma regardless of the drink volume.

Vertuo capsules come in several sizes, each corresponding to a specific format—from espresso to a large mug or even a carafe. This makes the system a good fit for those who enjoy not only classic espresso but also longer coffee drinks.

Important! Vertuo capsules are not compatible with Nespresso Original machines. In addition, the range of third-party compatible capsules for this system is still limited: in most cases, only original Nespresso Vertuo capsules are used.

The Nespresso Vertuo system is aimed at those who value a variety of formats and the convenience of automatic settings, and who are ready to use exclusively original Nespresso capsules.

4. Dolce Gusto

The Dolce Gusto system, developed by Nestlé together with Krups and De’Longhi, is known for its variety of flavors. Unlike systems focused exclusively on espresso and lungo, Dolce Gusto lets you make a wide range of drinks. The lineup includes classic black coffee (espresso, Americano, ristretto), milk-based drinks (latte macchiato, cappuccino), hot chocolate, cocoa, and various types of tea. Some ranges also include capsules for making cold drinks.

Dolce Gusto capsules have a distinctive shape that differs from Nespresso. The body is usually made of food-grade plastic, and the top is sealed with aluminum foil or a multilayer barrier material that protects the contents from oxygen and moisture. During preparation, the machine pierces the capsule from above, after which water passes through it under pressure. For milk-based drinks, two capsules are often used: the brown one contains coffee or the main ingredient, and the white one contains powdered milk.

Each capsule is designed for a specific drink volume. However, in most Dolce Gusto models, you can adjust the amount of water manually using a built-in lever or scale on the panel. This allows you to make your drink in the volume you like best.

Important! Dolce Gusto capsules have a unique format that does not fit other systems—such as Nespresso, Tassimo, Lavazza, or other capsule systems.

As a result, Dolce Gusto is the choice for those who value a wide variety of drinks and want to make not only espresso, but also latte, cappuccino, hot chocolate, or tea with a single coffee machine—using original capsules for this system—and also control the portion volume themselves.

5. Tassimo

The Tassimo system, owned by Jacobs Douwe Egberts, uses proprietary T-Discs with an integrated barcode. The coffee machine reads this code using Intellibrew technology and automatically selects the drink parameters—water volume, temperature, and brewing time. This way, each serving is prepared in a fully automatic mode, with no need for manual adjustments.

The range of drinks for the Tassimo system includes espresso, Americano, filter coffee, cappuccino, and latte, as well as hot chocolate and tea. A distinctive feature is the use of UHT milk for milk-based drinks. This milk undergoes ultra-high-temperature processing (heated to 135–150 °C for a few seconds and rapidly cooled), making it sterile and shelf-stable without refrigeration. Using UHT milk gives a more natural taste and texture compared to powdered mixes.

Important! Tassimo T-Discs are only compatible with Tassimo coffee machines. They do not fit capsule systems from Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Lavazza, or Caffitaly, as they differ in shape and brewing technology.

6. Lavazza (A Modo Mio and Blue)

The Italian brand Lavazza offers several capsule systems aimed at different use cases—home and commercial.

  • Lavazza A Modo Mio launched in 2007 and is intended primarily for home use. Each capsule contains up to 7.5 grams of ground coffee placed in a plastic cylinder and sealed with an aluminum lid. This design helps preserve the drink’s aroma and freshness for longer.
  • Lavazza Blue (the name stands for Best Lavazza Ultimate Espresso) is a professional capsule system designed for offices, cafés, and vending machines. Unlike the home A Modo Mio line, Blue capsules have a different format and contain more coffee, making them better suited to intensive use.

The system is designed to ensure stable extraction and consistent drink quality even at high preparation volumes. This makes it a convenient solution for professional settings where reliability and predictable results are key.

Important! A Modo Mio and Blue capsules are not compatible with each other. They have different sizes, constructions, and pressure requirements for brewing, so they cannot be used interchangeably.

Lavazza itself notes that A Modo Mio machines work only with original capsules or capsules officially compatible with this system. At the same time, there are third-party manufacturers on the market that produce capsules suitable for both A Modo Mio and Blue.

7. Caffitaly

The Caffitaly system was developed in Italy and has spread across many European countries. Its capsules have an original design: the body is made of plastic and the top is sealed with aluminum foil. Inside are two filters—one on top and one on the bottom—providing more even extraction.

The shape of Caffitaly capsules resembles a cylinder with a wider base and a slightly tapered top. This format makes the capsules incompatible with Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Tassimo, and Lavazza systems.

Important! Caffitaly capsules can only be used in Caffitaly coffee machines or in compatible models that officially support this format.

8. K-Cup

The K-Cup system, created by the American company Keurig, is one of the most popular in North America. The capsules are plastic, cylindrical cartridges with aluminum foil on top and a built-in paper filter inside. During brewing, the coffee machine pierces the capsule from above to supply water. Hot water under pressure passes through the ground coffee and the filter, providing extraction. In taste and brewing method, this drink is closer to filter coffee than to espresso.

The standard serving brewed with a K-Cup depends on the coffee machine model. Most Keurig devices allow you to choose a volume from 6 to 12 ounces (about 180–350 ml), but the exact range varies: some models offer only a few fixed volumes, while others allow more flexibility. This makes the system convenient for both small servings and large mugs of coffee.

The capsule selection is very diverse: in addition to classic coffees of various origins and roast levels, there are flavored drinks, tea, hot chocolate, and more.

Important! K-Cup capsules were originally designed for Keurig coffee machines. However, there are multi-format coffee machines on the market, such as HiBREW, that support K-Cup alongside other popular systems (for example, Nespresso and Dolce Gusto).

Since the end of 2020, all K-Cup capsules have been made from recyclable polypropylene (marking #5, PP). This is a relatively safe material widely used in food packaging and disposable tableware. In theory it is recyclable, but the practical possibility depends on local municipal programs, as not all recycling facilities accept #5 plastics.

9. L’OR BARISTA and L’OR capsules

The French brand L’OR, owned by JDE Peet’s, initially released aluminum L'OR Espresso capsules compatible with the Nespresso Original system. They offered users a wide selection of coffee blends with different flavors and aromas and became a popular alternative to original Nespresso capsules.

Later, the brand launched its own L’OR BARISTA system, developed together with Philips. It includes the proprietary coffee machine Philips L’OR Barista LM9012/60, which supports both standard Nespresso Original capsules and unique L’OR XXL capsules. These larger capsules let you make a double espresso or bigger-volume drinks.

Important! L’OR BARISTA XXL capsules are not compatible with Nespresso machines or other systems.

Thus, L’OR blends two approaches: it offers capsules compatible with the popular Nespresso Original system while also developing its own BARISTA ecosystem with unique XXL capsules. This gives users the option to choose between classic and larger portions of coffee using a single machine.

10. How to know which capsules fit your coffee machine

Your capsule choice depends directly on your coffee machine model. Each system uses its own capsule format, and they are not interchangeable. To avoid mistakes, follow a few simple steps:

  1. Check the label on your coffee machine. The body or manual usually states which system the device belongs to: Nespresso Original, Dolce Gusto, Tassimo, Lavazza A Modo Mio, etc.
  2. Look at the capsule shape. Capsules differ in size and design: Nespresso Original capsules are small and aluminum, Dolce Gusto are plastic and tall, Tassimo are disc-shaped with a barcode.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations. Brand websites indicate which capsules fit specific machine models and whether compatible alternatives exist.
  4. Pay attention to the text on capsule packaging. Makers of compatible products always indicate “Compatible with Nespresso Original” or “For Dolce Gusto.” If there’s no such marking, it’s better not to risk it.

Important! Choosing the wrong capsules can damage your coffee machine. So when buying, focus on the system your model belongs to. In our capsule coffee machine descriptions, we always indicate which capsules they’re compatible with—this helps you avoid mistakes and pick the right format right away.
The product page always lists compatible capsules.

11. Reusable capsules: an alternative to single-use systems?

You’ve probably seen reusable capsules for sale—special containers (usually plastic, stainless steel, or aluminum) that you can fill with ground coffee yourself. They’re designed for multiple uses and are available for different systems:

  • For Nespresso Original, there are the most options for reusable capsules (plastic and steel with a reusable lid).
  • For Dolce Gusto, there are also alternatives—most often plastic capsules with a lid that can be washed and reused.
  • For K-Cup (Keurig), there are official My K-Cup and similar products that you fill with your own coffee.
  • For Nespresso Vertuo and Tassimo, it’s more complicated: due to unique barcode and Centrifusion-based brewing technologies, such capsules aren’t officially supported. There are “DIY solutions” on the market, but they work inconsistently and may damage the machine.

Pros of reusable capsules:

  • Savings: using your own ground coffee is cheaper than buying single-use capsules.
  • Eco-friendlier: fewer plastic and aluminum waste.
  • Flexibility: choose any coffee, adjust grind size and strength.

Cons:

  • Time required for filling and cleaning.
  • Drink quality depends on grind and tamping—there’s less consistency than with single-use capsules.
  • In some cases, the coffee machine warranty may not apply when using non-original or reusable capsules.

Although reusable capsules seem like an eco-friendly and economical solution, in practice they often turn into extra hassle and a potential risk. You need to spend time filling and cleaning, drink quality can be unstable, and in some cases you could even damage the machine. For most users, it’s more practical to use original or proven compatible capsules.
