The Snugpak brand cocoon can be classified as a medium-priced category and recommended for winter tourism, mountain climbing, and tactical scenarios. The sleeping bag should provide a comfortable sleep at temperatures from -15 to -10 degrees Celsius. It is equipped with a branded synthetic filler Softie, which is very similar to natural down but better retains insulation properties when wet. To reduce heat loss, a hood, collar, and insulated zipper are used (high-quality YKK fittings are used).

The Snugpak Softie Elite 4's readiness for trekking use is confirmed by a reasonable weight (for winter items) of 1.95 kg and not very large dimensions in the compression sack — 28x24x24 cm (or about 16 liters of volume).

The sleeping bag has a polyester outer layer and a synthetic lining. The latter features two types of fabric — soft Paratex Light and insulating Reflectatherm. It is also stated that the material is reinforced in the foot area, allowing for overnight stays in shoes, which may be relevant in severe cold weather and military use.

With a total length of 220 cm (including the hood), the sleeping bag is suitable for heights up to 190 cm. Medium and short-height users are offered the ability to shorten the model using clamps in the foot area. Another feature is a special side insert. It allows for expanding the sleeping area in the shoulders (by default there is a reserve of 75 cm), which among other things can also serve as an additional method of adjusting the microclimate (ventilation).

The downside of the model is the absence of a zipper coupling feature, which for winter and challenging expeditions is certainly never redundant. In any case, the Snugpak Softie Elite 4 is a solid choice with excellent thermal insulation and flexible sleeping area adjustments.

The expedition sleeping bag by Pinguin is intended for winter tourism, including mountain climbs. It is claimed that users can expect a comfortable sleep even at temperatures ranging from -8 to -16 °C. Experienced campers should focus on the latter value, while newcomers and women should focus on the former.

The main insulating material of the Pinguin Expert CCS 195 2020 is the three layers of synthetic BHB Micro. This fabric is moisture-resistant (unlike natural insulators) and provides a balance between weight and size. Thus, as a winter solution, the sleeping bag is not heavy (2.1 kg) and, when compressed in the included compression stuff sack, has rather modest dimensions (33x26x26 cm, i.e., a volume of about 22 liters).

In addition to practical synthetic materials (nylon on the outside and polyester on the inside), the cocoon includes quality Japanese YKK brand hardware. The zipper also has the familiar fabric bite protection and includes reflective elements on the slider, making it more visible in the dark. Additionally, there is a pillow compartment, a well-drawing hood with a thermal collar, and loops for drying.

Two sleeping bags can be coupled together in one two-person sleeping bag, which will allow warming up faster or not freezing in even harsher frosts. The Pinguin Expert CCS 195 2020 is an interesting winter model that combines excellent insulation with good equipment and compact dimensions.

Among winter down sleeping bags, the OEX brand model is one of the most affordable. Here, natural insulation with a 600 fill power is used, and an additional hydrophobic coating is applied to improve insulation properties in wet weather. In addition to down, a hood, collar, and insulated zipper are offered to reduce heat loss. Plus, it allows for gluing two sleeping bags together into one two-person sleeping bag.

The OEX Leviathan EV 900 Down weighs a rather modest (by winter standards) 1.34 kg, while it can be successfully used at temperatures as low as -16 °C. For chilly sleepers, newcomer tourists, and women, it's better to focus on the t° limit, which is -9 °C.

The model is a universal sleeping bag suitable for both men and women. The shoulder width is slightly increased to 78 cm, so the tourist doesn't feel cramped, and the length reserve of 220 cm allows the cocoon to be used by tall users (up to 2 meters). An important bonus is the extended kit, which includes both a compression sack (with straps for compression and easy carrying in a hiking backpack) and a fabric bag for storage.

The model's shortcomings include slightly overestimated temperature settings. But the deviations between the declared and actual values do not exceed two to three degrees, so the cocoon still looks persuasive as a winter solution in most cases. The downside of the sleeping bag is the substandard quality of seams and hardware, so intensive use will show signs of wear quickly. But for its money, the OEX Leviathan EV 900 Down — winter down sleeping bag, certainly deserves attention.

The sleeping bag from Marmot is designed for tourists up to 183 cm in height. It is most notable for its materials. The outer layer and lining here are made from recycled nylon. The outside uses moisture-resistant fabric, while the inside is made of soft Taffeta textile.

Marmot Never Summer's high insulation properties are ensured by natural duck down. It effectively protects against heat loss while having relatively low weight (the cocoon weighs 1.8 kg in total) and does not take up much space compared to synthetic counterparts.

The model is equipped with a drawing hood and collar designed to protect the neck and head from the cold. For convenience, there is also an inner pocket and light-accumulating loops.

The zipper system deserves special mention. The main zipper is double, adding convenience during use, allowing for additional ventilation, etc. There is also a foot zipper. You can open it on a warm night to provide ventilation and add space for your feet (you won't feel cramped).

The manufacturer states that the sleeping bag is designed for temperatures down to -18 C (or 0 °F). At the same time, ISO tests show that men can sleep comfortably outdoors at temperatures as low as -15, and women — at temperatures down to -8 degrees Celsius.

The supply kit does not include a compression sack, but a regular transportation cover. Even in this one, the cocoon is not too bulky — 45x21x21 cm (volume less than 20 liters).

Marmot Never Summer is a practical winter sleeping bag with a convenient zipper system.

The mummy sleeping bag from Mountain Hardwear is an expedition solution recommended for mountaineering, challenging mountain climbs, and long hikes under difficult weather conditions. The model features a waterproof nylon shell, beneath which “hides” high-density natural down (800 fill), certified by RDS. Thanks to this filler and other structural features (hood, collar, strip along the zipper), the sleeping bag will allow you comfortably sleep in serious frosts — in the range of 11 – 18 degrees below zero.

High thermal insulation properties do not make the Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0F/-18C Reg heavy — the total weight is approximately 1.2 kg. The cocoon is designed for tourists up to 182 cm tall, offering fairly standard sleeping space sizes in the shoulders and increased space in the foot area. By default, the dimensions when folded are 42x21x21 cm (or 18.5 liters in volume). For carrying in a backpack, the product can be compressed well, up to 9.7 liters in the included compression sack.

The sleeping bag is available with both right and left-side zippers, allowing two such versions to be zipped together into one two-person solution. It is also worth highlighting the comfortable nylon lining with Ripstop weaving, quality fittings, an additional storage bag (in addition to the compression sack), and reflective elements on the zipper slider.

The downside of the model is the high price even compared to the top down competitors. But with the Mountain Hardwear Phantom 0F/-18C Reg, it is an extra charge for nearly the perfect combination of high insulation, compactness, and lightness.
