3-way valves are usually used when the required temperature is obtained by mixing in an appropriate proportion hot water from the boiler with cold return water. These products can also be used as diverting or switching valves when it is required to divide the water stream from the boiler into two circuits, e.g. for a heating system and a domestic hot water tank.
