Mix the contents of the package with warm water in a non-metal container until a thick, uniform consistency is achieved (note that 2 packages are needed to color medium-length hair, and 3 packages for long hair). After the mixture has cooled slightly, apply it to dry, unwashed hair and distribute along the entire length.
