Three types of F-35 were developed simultaneously: F-35A for the Air Force F-35B for the Marine Corps and F-35C for the Navy but the F-35B is the most ambitious type. The F-35B developed as a successor to the Marine Corps operated AV-8B Harrier II features a lifting fan installed between the cockpit and the engine and a rotating channel with three bearings that allows the alignment of the engine nozzle and is controlled there. The nozzle allows for a short take-off/vertical landing (STOVL). The aircraft also has supersonic flight capabilities stealth characteristics and high situational awareness through sensor fusion.
