Model overview based on user reviews
The Nokian WR D4 tires have received mixed reviews from users. They are praised for their performance on frosty and wet snow at low speeds, as well as their ability to hold the road well on dry and wet asphalt. Additionally, they are noted for being quite quiet and offered at an adequate price. However, they perform poorly on slippery surfaces such as ice, packed snow, and wet snow, leading to concerns about handling and braking. One user, with extensive driving experience, found them unsuitable for European winters, particularly in Kyiv, and compared them unfavorably to Michelin Alpin tires. Despite these concerns, another user recommended them for their quietness and good road performance, especially when used on an Audi A6 C7. Overall, while they may be suitable for certain conditions, they may not be the best choice for harsher winter environments.
Pros

Cons

Definitely not suitable for a European winter.

The tire performs terribly on any slippery surfaces: ice, packed snow, wet snow, basically anything slipperier than loose frosty (!) snow. The car handles poorly, doesn't brake well, and feels like it's gliding as if on summer tires, skidding in corners. After using Michelin Alpin for 7 seasons, this is just a catastrophe and worrisome. With almost 30 years of driving experience, I felt like a novice again)) Alpin is always predictable in slushy snow, but this Nokian is not.
I was sold this as a Scandinavian option. I wanted a tire for harsh winter, and that's what I got)) Definitely not suitable for our winter in Kyiv. I'm going to change them. I don't want to drive on such tires.
Performs well in frosty and wet snow at low speed. Holds the road well on dry and wet asphalt. Quite quiet.
On any slippery surfaces - it's terrible!

The Finnish Nokian WR D4 has been awarded the highest score for wet grip, which is marked "A" on the European Tyre Label.

Abundance of lamellas

The basis of the central part of the tread of the model is a massive rib with lamellas cut in it (not across the entire width) to improve control over the road situation. To the right and left of it are separate blocks with dense sipes, which form a directional tread pattern. Finally, another type of sipes are found in the shoulder areas — they increase traction on a snow-covered canvas and improve responsiveness when manoeuvring.

Predictability

Drainage grooves cut the tread in a variety of places, contributing to the rapid and efficient removal of melt water from the contact patch. As a result, the tyre is not afraid of either hydroplaning or slashplaning — the effect of a car sliding on snow slush that occurs at a speed of over 50 km/h. The tyre also goes well in deep snow, clinging to the road through chamfers on the ends of the shoulder blocks.

Comfortable ride

The tyre should be given preference for its further operation in mild climates — Nokian WR D4 guarantees a comfortable ride and safety in the conditions for which it is designed. With all this, the tyre has good mileage and provides a short braking distance, which is required from a good representative of premium winter tyres.
